26.Octculling the herd
My sili plants bore me several chillis and after some weeks I managed to harvest the most important part of all — the leaves!
I was saw a young papaya for sale by accident and ting! - a light bulb switched on. It’s proper tinola time.
Please excuse the pictures as I nearly forgot to capture the evidence. Kelvin loves soup-based dishes and hubby was salivating at the thought of tasting what he says is “authentic” Chicken Tinola, actually so was I! Finally I was able to eat my labour of love.
I was too eager, I forgot to peel the chicken’s skin, so the broth became too oily.
And as I said I nearly forgot to take a picture, talagang mauubos na sya.
These are hardy plants. They were nearly bald save for some shoots after my “harvest”, but they just continue to thrive. In fact we managed to harvest twice since these shots were taken, albeit no more papaya for the Tinola.

Umm..sarap!! Have you tried it with lemongrass? I’ve discovered that putting a couple of stalks of lemongrass (tanglad) makes it more delicious
auee, may nabibili din na tinola soup mix. perhaps, you can have your relatives in Pinas shipped the mixes there. but then again, masarap talaga yung fresh from the garden, di ba?
cookie, oo nga ‘no?? Subukan ko yan next time.
kotseng kuba, nagreklamo pa nga asawa ko pagkaluto ko dahil di ko daw naalis yung balat…
feng, baka meron din nyan dito. Ang binibili ko yung sampalok na may gabi “daw”, ok din

I made a tinola here once (without the leaves of chilli, it wasn\’t the same) it didn\’t go down well

you\’re tinola pic though looks good enough to eat
I remove chicken skin too, Auee. And cut fat off pork and beef. Yummy tinola.
Makapagtanim nga ng sili since someone commented I could probably have a sili plantation since my hands are “hot” meaning I can’t grow flowering plants
Oh, that’s cool… you grow your own sili. I want to be able to grow my own herbs and vegetables someday. Your tinola looks really great…. perfect for rainy weather.
hmm… sa nanay ko din oily ang tinola nya, but i love it just the same :-)
hi, auee!
i see you’ve visited my site, too! thanks for dropping by
i also have the chicken skin removed so the soup won’t be too oily. aside from the sili leaves, we also add malunggay leaves (great for breastfeeding moms like me
. you can also use sayote (in the US they call it chayote) instead of papaya. it softens faster than papaya.
btw, i love that you grow your own herbs and get to “harvest” it
i’ve tried growing basil, rosemary, thyme, and oregano before but they all withered. it must be the weather here in manila. but i’ll keep trying. nothing beats freshly picked herbs for homemade cooking
.
I am happy you can cook tinola and grow sili there. My children don’t complain even if I cook it everyday. hahaha Daling lutuin kasi eh.
What about tinalo? Serious, there’s a version of tinola called tinalo.
