25.SepAre you flip or Pinoy?
A British colleague asked me whether Filipinos are called flips. His roomie is a Filipina and told him so but he was sceptical.
I know flip originated from America. Wikipedia says some Filipinos avoid the term and “prefer to be simply called Filipino or Pinoy/Pinay instead”. I am one of those “some Filipinos”.
Am I being narrow-minded? My being revolts at the thought of responding when called flip by anyone. Perhaps because I’m not from America, I don’t fully understand the value of turning this negative term into positive. But I do understand why blacks would call each other negro but would be offended if non-blacks do the same.
Perhaps because I grew up in my native soil I just refuse any non-Filipino label. I’m not flip. I’m not a flip. I’m Pinoy. More specifically, I’m Pinay.
How about you? Flip ka ba?

Coincidence, I was just talking to my sister about this like 2 days ago. We were discussing about the different “minority” tags and she told me that we, Pinoys, were called “flips” and/or “Rice-eaters”. Parang derogatory nga eh. Gusto ko ngang magtaray pero wag na. Pakialam nila kung gusto nating kumain ng kanin. I’d rather not say my preferred “tags” for those who call us names. Bahala sila sa buhay nila. Basta tayo Pinoy…enough said
scrooch, hehe cool ka lang :-P
Kainis ‘no? My officemate said that from my expression when I heard his question, he takes it to mean I’m not happy with the term. I told him “DAMN RIGHT I’M NOT”. I did tell him that perhaps there are those who use it, like his roomie but I told him he’s not allowed to.
i’m a pinay!!!
parang “jap” for japanese… they find it derogatory din, though i don’t quite get it, since it’s just a shortened version.
funny that… my URL is myflipcorner, but honestly it’s got nothing to do with my being Filipino; I guess I have it to show the “flip” side of me, ie, the crazy, sad, side of me wanting to get out… oh well, there you go, to each his own :-)
jo, hell yeah! :-P
J, parang sa chinese “chinks”.. pero yung chinks talagang offensive sounding na… or pakis
pining, oo nga no? Ngayon ko lang napag-connect hehe But I know what you originally intended for it to mean.
:-P
Being called flip feels negative to me even if I am being weird and/or funny, I probably wouldn’t want to be called as such,
ako naman I use flip with friends and terms like “praning”, “baliw” etc etc
Pero siempre kung at ease lang. Ibang kaso na yung di mo naman gaanong kakilala tatawagin kang flip.
:-P that can be awkward.
here in NY, Filipinos are called FLIP which is an acronym for “FUNNY LITTLE ISLAND PEOPLE.”
mommy chi, thanks for commenting… Yes flip is more American than Philippines’ slang. According to “history” flip was originally “F*cking Little Island People” and Pinoys in the 60′s owned it & gave it the “funny” change. Nowadays accdg to WIKI, it’s given different meanings. The one that I like goes “fine looking island people”
:-)
Auee, whoever will dare call me a “flip” will get a tonguelashing. haha I prefer Filipino more than pinoy, filipina, pinay.
I’d rather be called a Filipina or Pinay.
geri, hehe oo nga e. Sometimes I imagine myself transplanted in NY, USA and being called that, I might go berserk
:-P
Rachel, I like Pinoy / Pinay a lot better too
pinay… though some bisaya i know take a piss on me calling me BISAYA… bisayang tisay (me being just a bit more european…
bisayang tisay ha… Alam mo hubby ko is Waray. When we were queueing in the Italian embassy 4 years ago, the Pinoys weren’t speaking to him, sa akin lang. Nung nagsalita sya gulat sila lahat, akala daw nila e Italiano — ngek! Italianong waray kako.
